Roti Boy
Or
Mexican Bun???
Finally made them! My all time favourite Roti Boy and Mexican Buns! The only reason i love them is because they're the closest thing to 'po lo bao' and in most cases, they either contain buttermilk or pure butter as the filling, something which i would have preference over when i'm not being 'weight conscious'.
Roti boy bun is actually a sweet Mexican butter bun baked with a crisp, coffee-flavoured topping. The name originates from a popular bakery shop in West M'sia whose signature product is RotiBoy. People claimed they are the best despite there are so many imitators and copycats around (like the one in Palm Square??), and i've tried them myself, but maybe it's my mentality, i still insist No.10 as the best. **thumbs up**
Likewise, mexican bun is almost similar, apart that it's not coffee flavoured but plain, and the filling is mostly buttermilk. I found some recipes online and decided i should try them out which i finally did!
To the plain mexican buns, i used buttermilk as the filling. Purely simple, just combination of butter, icing sugar and milk powder.
To the Rotiboys, i just wrapped a chunk of butter with the dough. Would be best if it's salted butter, but since i've got none, i just used unsalted. More on the healthy side, i guess?
The bread is still as soft as ever the next day (i used sponge type method dough), and crust crunchy! I love how well the butter goes with the bun, honestly, this is something anyone who loves mexican buns should try out!!
